MARLINS LOSE THE HARD WAY

Posted: Monday, September 06, 1999 Baseball

Miami (Fl.)--- Yesterday at Pro Player the Padres were able to capitalized on the many mistakes the young Marlins committed. Marlins pitcher Vladimir Nunez was having a quality start before he and his defense took an apparent nap while on the field. A strikeout turned passball, a failed attempt by Nunez himself to get an out on a bunt, and a beautifully placed squeeze bunt by Padre Second Basemen, Damien Jackson, all resulted in two unearned runs and eventually the game. In the eighth inning the Padres added insurance when Dave Magadan singled in a run followed by Eric Owens’ RBI double. They continued in the ninth inning when Phil Nevin drove in a run on an infield single which made the score 5-2. San Diego pitcher Matt Clement hurled 6 1/3 innings of two baseball while striking out five. Padre closer Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his league leading 35th save and, in the process, giving Clement his second win against the fish in less than a month. The Marlins will have to lick their wounds quickly because they have an early matinee against the Los Angeles Dodgers today at 4:00 pm.

GAME SUMMARY

(WP) Matt Clement (7-12)

(LP) Vladimir Nunez (6-7)

(S) Trevor Hoffman (35)
